The Tally Dice

Setup

  • Take a Token. Each player takes an IN / OUT token and flips it to IN.
  • Share the Dice Roll Cards. Place them within reach of all players.
  • Pick a First Roller. Choose a player to roll first. They become the first active player.
  • Keep Score. Use a score sheet, or the free Tally Up scoring app.

Three Things to Know

IN or OUT

Before each Main Roll and each Up Die roll, each player secretly chooses to stay IN for more points or go OUT and bank them. Once you're OUT, you're OUT for the rest of the round.

Running Total

Points from every roll in a round add up. The Running Total starts at zero each round.

Bank or Bust

Going OUT banks the Running Total into your score. Everyone still IN when the roll busts scores nothing for the round.

Playing a Round

  1. The active player chooses three Tally Dice to roll. These dice can't be swapped for other Tally Dice during the round.

  2. The active player rolls their chosen dice. This is the Main Roll.

  3. Resolve the roll:

    • 0 or 1 star: Add the numbers to the Running Total.
    • 2 stars: Bust! Everyone still IN scores nothing and the round ends. Skip to step 5.
    • 3 stars: Tally Up! The first player to shout it scores 200 points; everyone else still IN gets 100. Play continues.
    • IN or OUT: The active player says “1… 2… 3…!” and everyone reveals their IN / OUT token at the same time.
    • Bank: Everyone who goes OUT adds the current Running Total to their score.
    • Circled number: Roll and resolve the Up Die. Then players decide IN or OUT again, and bank if they go OUT.

See Resolving the Roll for examples.

  4. Repeat steps 2–3 until everyone has gone OUT, or there is a bust. The active player keeps rolling even if they have gone OUT.

  5. Reset the Running Total to zero, flip all tokens back to IN, and pass the dice to the next player clockwise. They choose any three Tally Dice and the round starts again.

Resolving the Roll

Count the stars showing on the Main Roll.

0 or 1 star

  • Add the numbers on the dice to the Running Total.
  • If any number is circled, the Up Die is rolled after everyone still IN decides IN or OUT.

Bust!

  • The round ends immediately and the Running Total resets to zero.
  • Everyone still IN scores nothing.
  • The dice pass to the next player clockwise.

Tally Up!

  • The first player to shout “Tally Up!” scores a 200-point bonus, even if they've gone OUT.
  • Everyone else still IN gets 100 points added to their score.
  • Only the original three dice of a Main Roll can Tally Up.
  • The Running Total doesn't change.
  • Play continues: a Tally Up! does not end the round.
Main Roll
Running Total
0 + 40 + 70 = 110
One star, so the points count: 110 goes on the Running Total. The circled 70 means the Up Die is rolled after everyone still IN decides IN or OUT.

The Up Die

If any circled number shows on the Main Roll, the Up Die is rolled. The active player rolls the Up Die.

Bonus Roll
Roll one extra Tally Die.
Bonus Roll
Roll two extra Tally Dice.
Bonus Roll
Roll all three extra Tally Dice.
Penalty
Subtract 100 from the Running Total.
Bonus
Add 100 to the Running Total.
Bonus
Double the Running Total.

The Up Die is rolled only once per Main Roll, however many numbers are circled. After the Up Die, players decide IN or OUT again.

Bonus Roll (+1, +2, +3)

  • The active player rolls that many extra Tally Dice, chosen from the dice not rolled in the Main Roll.
  • If two or more stars are showing across all the dice, from both the Main Roll and the Bonus Roll, it's a bust: everyone still IN scores nothing and the round ends.
  • Otherwise, add the numbers on the Bonus Roll to the Running Total.
  • Circles on a Bonus Roll don't roll the Up Die again.
  • Then players decide IN or OUT again, and bank if they go OUT, as in step 3 of Playing a Round.
Main Roll
Up Die
Bonus Roll
The Main Roll adds 60 and its circled 40 calls the Up Die, which shows +2. Two of the unrolled dice add 90 more. Across all five dice there's still only one star, so the Running Total reaches 150.

End of Game

The game ends when a player reaches 2,500 points or more at the end of a round. If more than one player reaches 2,500, the highest score wins. In case of a tie, play another round.

Want to Mix It Up?

  • Shorter or longer game. Change the target score if 2,500 feels too long or too short.
  • One turn each. Instead of playing to a score, end the game after every player has been the active player at least once.
  • High stakes. Players choose IN or OUT only before each Main Roll. If you're IN, you also stay IN for the Up Die roll, if there is one.

FAQ

If the active player goes OUT, do they keep rolling?
Yes. The active player keeps rolling for everyone still IN until everyone is OUT or there's a bust.
Can the active player change which three dice they roll during a round?
No. Once the three Tally Dice are chosen at the start of the round, they're used for every Main Roll that round.
Is the Up Die rolled more than once if several numbers are circled?
No. The Up Die is rolled once per Main Roll, however many circled numbers come up.
Can the Running Total go below zero?
Yes. A −100 on the Up Die can take it below zero.
Can a Bonus Roll score a Tally Up!?
No. A Tally Up! only counts when the original three dice of a Main Roll show three stars.
Who gets the Tally Up! bonus?
The first player to shout “Tally Up!” scores 200 points, even if they've gone OUT. Everyone else still IN gets 100 points added to their score.
